New Era Tops Bad Smell in HEPD Playoffs
Hoffman Estates - August 10, 2009
After receiving a bye and then winning its first game, Bad Smell lost in the third round of the 2009 Hoffman Estates Park District summer softball league playoffs by a score of 21-17 to New Era.Ê After a quiet start to the game, Smell entered the bottom of the fifth inning down 11-4.Ê Three innings and 12 runs later, the score was tied.Ê Due to the time constraints, the tie breaker rules were invoked, whereby each team starts with a runner on second base and only one pitch is made to a batter.Ê If the batter takes a strike or hits a foul ball, he is out.Ê If he takes a ball, he walks.Ê New Era was able to score 5 under these rules and Smell was only able to plate 1.Ê This was most likely the best game that Smell played all year, hanging tough and coming back against a quality team.
Jim Cardella pitched his best game of the year and Smell took advantage of opportunities in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.Ê Four guys were 3 for 4 Ð Kevin Stevens [2R, 3RBI, triple, walk], a returning Kurt Engel [1R, 3RBI, walk], Mike Choma [1R, RBI, walk] and Rich Brown [2R, 3RBI, double, triple, SAC].ÊÊSmell finished the year at 7-5.
Smell continued its downward spiral to the end of the summer regular season with a 15-5 loss to Commit to the Indian, dropping their Summer League record to 6-4. In a continuation of a disappointing trend, the Smell offense only managed 13 hits and hit into 15 Fly/Pop outs, in failing to match the normal offense of their opponent. Unfortunately, the frustration also carried over to the defense and pitching, which was mediocre at best, in limiting the extra outs.
The Smell offense was led by super sub Rich Brown 2 for 2 (R, double, Sac Fly, BB, rbi), Mike Choma 2 for 4 (R, double, rbi), Mike D'Aleasandro 2 for 4 (R), Kris Kirmiss 2 for 4 (R). Smell plays its next game in the HE 2009 Summer Post Season Tournament on Thurs. 8/6/09 at 7:30pm vs. an opponent to be determined.
Smell came out with no emotion or intensity in rolling over to the Hoodlums 12-2 in a 6 inning slaughter rule loss, dropping their Summer League record to 6-3. Smell melted down completely offensively with 13 Fly/Pop Outs and managing only 5 hits for the game (with Tom Taylor getting 2 hits), and turned the lineup over only 2 times in 6 innings. Smell plays its next game in Hoffman Estates on Thurs. 7/16/09 at 6:30pm vs. Commit to the Indian.
Smell missed another opportunity to take control of the Thursday Night Summer League by losing to Thunder 15-11 dropping their record to 6-2. In a very winnable game, Smell failed to match the intensity of their opposition and came up just short in all the elements of this game. Smell used a lethal combination of poor defense (failing to make key plays at critical points in the game) resulting in extra outs for their opponent and a mediocre offense (only 4 extra base hits) in not matching their opponent's effort.
The Smell offense was led by Kevin Stevens 3 for 3 (R, Sac Fly, rbi), Mike Choma 3 for 4 (3R, rbi), Kris Kirmiss (2R, double, triple, 3 rbi's), Mike D'Alesandro 2 for 4 (R, 2 doubles, rbi), Andrew Cardella 2 for 3 (2R), Jim Cardella 2 for 3 (R), and Coach Glenn 2 for 3 (rbi). Smell plays its next game in Hoffman Estates on Thurs. 7/9/09 at 8:30pm vs. Hoodlums.

Smell blew a golden opportunity to take control of the Thursday night Summer League by losing to the undefeated Hoodlums 16-8 dropping their record to 3-1. Smell took advantage of a disinterested (and apparently inebriated) opponent and changing weather conditions to achieve a 15-3 (5-inning slaughter rule) victory improving Smell's Summer League record to 3-0. Smell jumped out to a 9-1 lead after 2 innings and successfully navigated thru blustery winds as a front moved thru from the 3rd inning on. The Smell defense was able to adapt in support of Coach Glenn's effective pitching.

Smell opened up the 2009 Summer League in impressive fashion by defeating the Wise Guys 24-14 (in a 6-inning slaughter rule win). Despite missing 5 starters (for various bizarre reasons) the visiting Smell offense jumped out early on its opponent scoring 9, 4, 1, and 6 runs in the first 4 innings jumping out to a 20-7 lead. The Wise Guys jumped back into the game with 7 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning thanks to timely hitting and extra outs from the Smell defense. Coach Knapik once again will manage a rag-tag cast of characters on their quest to repeat last seasons championship ways. Can history repeat itself? With the exit of some big name players to free agency, can harmony be achieved during this tumultuous time in Smell's history?
Hoping to inspire, the coach has implemented a "don't ask, don't tell" policy (for those leaning toward the effeminate = those with low batting averages) and encourages everyone on the roster to avoid receiving and transmitting the H1N1 Flu virus. On the subject of team uniforms, Smell's
brown shirted leader evaluated complex statistical data and determined that team uniforms were only appropriate during his reign as leader of the 4th Reich. Stay tuned for the blitzkrieg!

For the 2nd consecutive year
Smell advanced to semi-finals of the Hoffman Estates Summer
Tournament only to lose 17-8 to the eventual champions,
theÊBall Busters. The Smell offense mysteriously went dormant
(only 11 total hits and 1 extra base hit) and simply did
not keep pace with the Ball Busters lineup. Smell put up
4 runs in the home half of the 5th inning but could only
score single runs in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 6th innings,
leavingÊat least 2 runners on baseÊto end the first four
innings. The Ball Busters scored 6 runs in the 4th inning
and 5 runs in the 7th inning to put the game away.
The anemic Smell offense was led by Coach Glenn 2 forÊ3
(rbi), Donnie Nommensen 2 for 3 (R), Keith Henderson 2
for 4 (R, rbi), and Brad Giebelhausen 1 for 3 (2R, Solo
HR, BB, rbi). Smell's next game will be on Thurs. 8/21/08
at 6:30pm where they will participate in a 3 team playoff
with the Ice Men and Bandito Barney's to determine the
2008 Thursday Night Summer League Champion.

TheÊSmell offense was led by Kris Kirmiss 4 for 5 (4R,ÊTwo 2-Run HR's, double, 6 rbi's), Mike D'Alesandro 4 for 4 (4R, triple, 2 doubles, BB, 3 rbi's), Mike Choma 3 for 3 (4R, double, BB, 3 rbi's), Jason Cardella 3 for 3 (2 R, double, Sac Fly, rbi), Donnie Nommensen 3 for 3 (R, Sac Fly, 2 rbi's), Tom Taylor 3 for 4 (3R, 3-run HR, BB, 3 rbi's), and Coach Glenn 3 for 4 (2R, 3 rbi's). "The Ladies Of Smell"
Smell shook off the rust of a 2 week layoff to win
its 2008 HE Summer Tournament Opener 10-8 over Ray's N Hell (from the Wed.
Night League) and advance to the tournament quarter-finals. The visiting Smell
offense put pressure on its opponent early by scoring 4 runs in the 1st inning
and 3 runs in the 3rd inning to jump out to a 7-0 lead. Ray's N Hell jumped
back into the game in the home half of the 4th inning and tied the score up
at 7 apiece, thanks to timely hitting and extra outs given up by the Smell
infield. The Smell offense responded in the next inning with 3 runs, highlighted
by Brad "Mohawk" Giebelhausen's 3-Run HR. The Smell defense settled down for
the rest of the game, giving up a meaningless run in the bottom of the 7th
inning in support of Coach Glenn's effective pitching.
The Smell offense was led by Brad "Mohawk" Giebelhausen 3 for 4 (2R, 3-Run
HR, double, 7 rbi's), Tom Taylor 3 for 4 (3R, 2 doubles), Mike Choma 2 for
4 (R, rbi), Coach Glenn 2 for 3, and Mike D'Alesandro 1 for 2 (3R, 2 BB,

Smell bounced back from last weeks disappointing loss with one of their best games of the season in defeating the Hoodlums for a 32-2 (5-inning slaughter rule) win, improving Smell's Summer League record to 7-3. The visiting Smell lineup completely overwhelmed the Hoodlums pounding out 35 hits (including 5 HR's, 4 doubles, and 2 BB's) and scoring 4 runs, 5 runs, 5 runs, 5 runs, and 13 runs in the 1st 5 innings. Each member of the Smell line-up had at least 2Êhits, and the Smell defense was solid behind the effective pitching of Coach Glenn.

With this win, Smell concludes t he 2008 Summer League and qualified for the Hoffman Estates 2008 Summer Post Season Tournament. The first game for Smell in the tournament is on Mon. 8/11/08 @ 6:30pm vs. Ray's N Hell from the Wed. Night League.
In one of the more disappointing games of the season, Bandito Barney's avenged an earlier loss to Smell 25-20, dropping Smell's Summer League record to 5-3. After a scoreless 1st inning by both teams, Smell could not match Bandito Barney's relentless hitting attack and simply did not make enough plays both offensively and defensively to pull out a win. Smell missed many opportunities to pull out this game by failing to score in the 5th inning and leaving the bases loaded in the home half of the 6th and 7th innings which made the difference in the ball game.
Smell was led offensively by Brad "Mohawk" Giebelhausen 2 for 4 (2R, 2 3-run HR's, BB, 6 rbi's), Tom Taylor 4 for 5 (2R, triple, rbi), Mike Choma 4 for 5 (3R, 2 rbi's), Al Collela 3 for 3 (3R, 2 doubles, 2 BB's, 4 rbi's), Coach Glenn 3 for 4 (R, 2 rbi's), and Mike D'Alesandro 3 for 5 (3R, 3 rbi's). Smell plays its next game in Hoffman Estates on Thurs. 7/24/08 at 7:30pm vs. Hoodlums.
The only thing that stopped the Smell hitters was
a strong thunderstorm that forced the game with the Ice Men to be suspended after
4 innings with Smell leading 20-1. As of now the game is scheduled to resume
on Thurs. 8/7/08 @ 8:30pm with the Ice Men coming to bat in the top of the 5th
inning. Finally, after the Ice Men had a team meeting after their game on Thurs.
7/24/08, they decided as a team not to finish the suspended game and concede
the victory to Bad Smell. In 4 innings the Smell hitters pounded out 24 hits
in scoring 6 runs, 3 runs, 9 runs, and 2 runs in the 1st thru 4th innings respectively;
which more than supported the superb pitching of Tom Taylor.
The Smell offense was led by a monster hitting performance from Kris Kirmiss 3 for 4 (4R, 3 HR's (Grand Slam, 3-Run, Solo), HOE, 8 rbi's), Tom Taylor 4 for 4 (4R, triple, 2 rbi's), Keith Henderson 3 for 3 (R, 4 rbi's), Al Collela 3 for 3 (R, rbi), and Mike D'Alesandro 3 for 4 (2R, 2 rbi's, and the dubious honor of having the shortest hit in Bad Smell history - 1 FOOT). With this win, Smell concludes the 2008 Summer League with a final record of 7-3. Smell's next game will be when they play in the Hoffman Estates 2008 Summer Post Season Tournament on Mon. 8/11/08 at 6:30pm vs. Ray's N Hell from the Wed. Night League.
Smell overcame a sluggish night at the plate to gut out a hard fought 14-13 comeback victory over G Whiz, improving Smell's summer league record to 5-2. Smell's offense could only muster 14 hits (including 3 solo HR's and 1 double) but utilized 11 walks and 2 HOE's to find a way to win. Smell overcame a 13-4 deficit to score 3 runs, 5 runs, and 2 runs in the home half of the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings respectively to get the the win. In the 7th inning the Smell hitters showed patience in coaxing 3 walks to 3 of the first four hitters to load the bases for Tom Taylor's game winning 2-run base hit.
Smell also came up with the defensive play of the year so far as G Whiz got their first 2 hitters on base. The third batter got a base hit to left fielder Mike Choma who threw out the runner trying to score from 2nd base. Catcher Donny Nommensen immediately threw to 1st baseman Keith Henderson who tagged the hitter between 1st and 2nd base. Keith then threw to 3rd baseman Kevin Stevens who threw back to 2nd baseman Jason Cardella to catch the other runner going back to 2nd base completing the exciting triple play.
Smell was led offensively by Kevin Stevens 3 for 3 (BB, 3 rbi's), Tom Taylor 3 for 5 (2R, double, 2 rbi's), Brad "Mohawk" Giebelhausen 2 for 3 (2R, 2 solo HR's, BB, 2 rbi's), Kris Kirmiss 2 for 4 (2R, solo HR, 2 rbi's), and Mike Choma 2 for 3 (3R, BB, rbi). Smell plays its next game in Hoffman Estates on Thursday 6/26/08 at 8:30pm vs. G Whiz.
Smell's line-up exploded in impressive fashion as they overwhelmed an over matched CTU Crush team for a 30-6 (4-inning slaughter rule) win, improving Smell's summer League record to 3-2. Smell's hitting attack pounded out 30 hits (includingÊ5 HR's,Ê4 triples, and 2 doubles) and utilized 8 HOE's to "Crush" their opponent as well as one 4 wheeled device.

Unfortunate result of the "Mohawks" monstrous chops on one of the lone cars in the lot behind left center field!
Smell was led offensively by a monster game from Brad "Mohawk" Giebelhausen's 4 for 5 (3R, 2Ê3-run HR's, double, HOE, 7 rbi's), Tom Taylor 5 for 5 (4R, 2-run HR, double, 4 rbi's), Kris Kirmiss 4 for 5 (4R, 2-run HR, triple, double, 3 rbi's), Mike D'Alesandro 3 for 4 (4R, 2-run HR, triple, SAC Fly, HOE, 6 rbi's), and Mike Choma 4 for 5 (4R, HOE, rbi). Smell plays its next game in Hoffman Estates on Thursday 6/19/087 at 8:30pm vs. Lites Out.
Smell lost a hard fought battle with their long-time rivals the Ice Men 22-19, dropping Smell's Summer League record to 2-2. Smell fought back from its own defensive lapses to force a 18-18 tie after 6 innings and the 1 hour time limit expired. Smell was only able to get 1 more run under the tie-breaker rules while the Ice Men won the game in the home half of the inning on a walk-off grand slam HR. Previously, both teams traded big offensive innings when the visiting Smell trailed by 2 runs entering the top of the 6th inning. With both teams notified that this would be the last inning (due to the 1 hour time limit), Smell dug down and pushed 3 runs across to take a 1 run lead. In the home half, Smell had chances defensively to shut down the Ice Men, but gave them extra outs to allow them to push across the tying run.
Smell was led offensively by Mike D'Alesandro 3 for 4 (2R, triple, BB, 3 rbi's), Tom Taylor 3 for 5 (2R, 2 doubles), Keith Henderson 3 for 5 (3R, r bi), and Al Collela 3 for 4 (2R, 2 rbi's). Coach Glenn offers special thanks for the contributions from Mike Hagen 3 for 4 (3R, 2 rbi's) and Kris Kirmiss 2 for 4 (2R, 2-Run HR, double, HOE, 3 rbi's) for substituting 9on short notice. Smell plays its next game in Hoffman Estates on Thursday 6/12/08 at 7:30pm vs. CTU Crush.
Smell experienced a reality check as they were outplayed
by G Whiz and suffered a tough 16-12 loss, dropping their Summer League record
to 2-1. G Whiz used a lethal combination of consistent hitting (scoring in every
inning), good pitching and defense; coupled with Smell's mediocre infield defense
and pitching, and lethargic hitting from key members of the Smell lineup.
Smell
was led offensively by Tom Taylor 3 for 5 (2R, 3B, 5 rbi's), Mike Choma 3 for
4 (2R, 2 rbi's), and Jason Cardella 3 for 4 (2R, HOE ). The loss put a damper
on the highly anticipated return of Smell legend Kevin Stevens 2 for 5 (2R, 2B,
rbi). Smell will need to rebound and respond to this small adversity quickly
as their next game in Hoffman Estates is on Thurs. 6/5/08 at 6:30pm vs. long-time
rivals the Icemen.

The relentless Smell hitting attack pounded out 26 hits and scored 5 runs, 6 runs, and 6 runs in the top of the 2nd, 3rd, and 7th innings respectively to close out the victory. The Smell defense continues to be solid behind the effective pitching of the ageless Jim Cardella.
The Smell offense was led by Mike D'Alesandro's monster 5 for 5 offensive display (5R, hitting for the cycle, 4 rbi's), Brad Giebelhausen 5 for 5 (2R, 2 doubles, 5 rbi's), and birthday boy Jim Cardella 5 for 5 (3R, rbi). Coach Glenn again offers special thanks to Phil Garcia for substituting defensively at 2B and contributing at the plate with 2 for 5 (R, double, rbi). Smell has a BYE on Thursday 5/22/08 and plays its next game in Hoffman Estates on Thursday 5/29/08 at 8:30pm vs. G Whiz.

The Smell offense pounded out 25 hits, with each member of the Smell lineup getting at least 1 hit.

Please let coach Glenn know if there are any specific games that you know you are not going to make. For those who will start playing later in the season (due to work and/or family commitments or injury) let him know the date when you think you will start playing so he can get subs lined up. Also, if you have any recent change of address or phone contact numbers please email Glenn with those changes so it can be updated on the roster.
Mr. Kelly sent out a email that our final scheduled practice is Tues. 5/6/08 at 6:15 by my house. Glenn will be at the field before the 1st game by 5:45 pm to have batting practice for those who are interested. Please try to be early (before 6:15pm) to sign the roster.!
